Positive People are hosting a weekly ‘Community Club’ in Liskeard, Cornwall, every Thursday from 10.00am to 12.30pm at the Liskerrett Centre in partnership with Active Plus.
The club focuses on building an inclusive community – opening its doors to anyone who is over 18 and out of work, for whatever reason. To build confidence and skills, whilst enjoying pasties, cake, tea and coffee at the same time!
The club is a drop-in (no booking necessary) session and is well attended, with people from a variety of different backgrounds coming together to support one another to start working towards a better future. There are currently 18 regular attendees with different barriers to overcome, whether that be related to health, impairment, disability or anxiety.
The participants have all attended an Active Plus six-week confidence building course as part of the Positive People programme and are currently being supported by the programme in different ways depending upon their needs.
Some of the participants are focused on getting back into employment and have enrolled on the programme to help build their confidence, and gain direction in relation to the progression opportunities available to them. Positive People have been able to provide dedicated one on one support to look at training and qualifications in subjects such as English Literacy and IT to increase individual’s work prospects and boost their CVs.
For other attendees it’s more about getting proactive in their community, social interaction and building confidence. So much so, that the group have taken on the task of holding a community event in Liskeard in February 2019!
“The group are really keen to look at new ways the project can engage with the community and promote how we can help. There are lots of great ideas and a diverse set of skills within the group that, with the right support, can deliver a fantastic event for all the community to enjoy!” says Dave Phillips, Positive People Change Coach for South and East Cornwall.
So far, the group are brainstorming ideas for the community event which promises to be a day for everyone’s enjoyment and a perfect start to the February half-term break. The group will take ownership over the organisation and promotional ideas for the event, which will be no small task, as the group are thinking BIG!
“Positive People will be on hand to support and facilitate the group, although this is more about them building confidence and skills, and on its success, feeling the merits of accomplishment and achievement. If it’s a great day for their local community, family and friends, there will be a sense of real reward in putting in the hard work between now and February to ensure it succeeds.” says Dave.
We’ll let you know the date of the event as soon as we have it. Let’s hope the rain, snow, sleet and gales hold off… but hey, that’s what plan B is for!
