From October this year, Positive People put on a series of Creative Digital Skills sessions for participants on the project and members of the public. These sessions are designed to help people become more confident with using technology in fun and hands-on ways. Many people think of IT as sitting down at a computer and creating a spreadsheet, but there is so much more to it than that. Over the course of the next two years, the project will run events on photography, cookery, music, filmmaking, treasure hunting, kayaking and many more, incorporating technology into all of these and showing how diverse and practical digital technology can be.
One of our first Creative Session was an adventurous mountain biking experience in Haldon Forest run by Cosmic and supported by Pop+. Guided by trained instructors from Forest Cycle Hire, a group was taken out around the Haldon Forest and taught some essential biking skills for navigating rough and hilly terrain.
To make things more interesting, each member of the group was equipped with an action camera to record the footage of their ride. These affordable action cameras record up to 1080p High Definition footage and 60 frames per second but are a fraction of the cost of the most popular high street brand. On a later date, the group will be getting back together to edit the footage into their own mini movie so they can take their memories home and share them with friends and family. This session will be led by Cosmic trainers, who will share their experience of filmmaking.
For many members of the group, this was the first time they had sat on a bike in years, so this experience gave them the confidence they needed to get back on the saddle and feel the wind through their helmets! During the day they rode several miles through the forest on three routes of increasing difficulty and ended with a skills session in a specially designed area of the forest. This skills area allowed the group to perform small jumps, balance on bridges and slalom through trees!
Here is a sneak peak of some of the footage captured on the day:
