The Christmas season with Positive People got off to a jolly start this year with its first event in Plymouth Moment’s Cafe on Saturday 8th December. The event saw a gathering of over 30 guests from across South Devon who came to join in the festivities.
The event was organised by Pop+, a partner on the project, as a chance for people from the community to come together and enjoy some free activities, free food and free fun. This was all funded on the Positive People project by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery, through the Big Lottery fund. The event was open to people who were on the project, and others who might be interested in joining the project or finding out more about it.
Avril Bankes-Fay, Partnership Manager from Pluss, said, “The Positive People Christmas events allow our participants to do something creative and meaningful in preparation for the Christmas season. They are also an opportunity for people just to chat together and get involved with their community in a relaxed environment.”
Digital Training Assistant, Emma, from Cosmic, added, “Christmas can be a stressful and challenging time of year for many people, so our events aim to relieve some of this strain and give everyone a chance to enjoy a bit of worry-free festive fun.”
Contract holders Pluss took park in the event, as well as partners Torbay Community Development Trust (TCDT) and Cosmic. For those with a taste for fruit cake and yule log, Pluss provided a cake decorating activity where participants were able to take their creations home with them. TCDT brought evergreen ferns, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, pine cones and other materials for participants to create their own Christmas wreaths. On the digital side of the project, Cosmic helped participants to design and create their own Christmas cards on a laptop, which they could then print and give to loved ones.
The team were also accompanied by specialist providers who brought along other activities such as winter-themed T-shirt printing, bauble making and bag-for-life designing. With a wide range of activities, there was something for everyone to try. The day ended with a delicious spread of festive food provided by the venue, Moments Cafe.
Louise, a participant on the project said “It was absolutely brilliant – the activities were amazing and not something I would be able to do at home, so thank you very much, a lovely day.”
The Positive People Christmas events continued on Monday 10th December in Torquay and North Devon and will finish off in Buckfastleigh on the 14th December.
